9 Pregnancy Milestones No One Tells You About

1. The first day you make it through without puking.

While the pregnancy books and articles like to make you think that you magically wake up on the day that you hit 12 weeks, completely cured of morning sickness, it doesn’t exactly work that way. Instead, you may find yourself cursing all the “what to expect” advice out there when you’ve passed well into the second trimester without a puking reprieve in sight.

But I assure you, if you’re one of the lucky ones, there will come a day, somewhere around the 15-week mark, when you find yourself sitting down to dinner and looking around in amazement when you realize, “Hey! I don’t feel sick!”

2. The day you finally give up and buy the maternity clothes.

“Oh, I don’t need those maternity shirts!” you may think to yourself somewhere in the first trimester. “Surely, I’ll be one of those women who barely show when I’m pregnant.”

But happy will be the day when you finally admit defeat and slide into one of those cool, comfortable maternity shirts and revel in the elastic panel of a good maternity jean. And you will realize, much to your horror, how you have apparently been holding your breath for the last month of your life when your body involuntarily takes its first deep breath in a long time …

Ahhhhh.

3. When you finally settle the “should we find out?” discussion.

“Should we find out what if the baby is a boy or girl??”

“I don’t know. What do you think?”

“I’m not sure. Whatever you want is fine.”

“But I don’t want to know if you don’t want to know.”

Get past 20 weeks and be glad that decision is finally over.

4. When you finally convince your significant other to paint your toes.

It may not be perfect, but it’s so much better than trying to find that perfect position to do it yourself. Am I right, ladies? Bonus points if you can get a foot massage thrown in!

6.The night you don’t want to crash by 8 p.m.

In the first trimester, I am toast by 8 p.m. every night. I am literally falling asleep at the table/putting my kids to bed/pretending to enjoy the zombie-eating show my husband is watching on Netflix. So happy is the day when I realize that, lo and behold, I still have energy left at night! I mean, not a lot, of course, but still. I could read! Or take a bath! Or browse Pinterest for projects I won’t do and stuff I won’t make! #winning.

7.The moment you decide on a name you both don’t absolutely hate.

It’s like the skies break and the heavens are shining down upon you, my friend. Because there is nothing more time-consuming/obnoxious/thoroughly frustrating than getting two people to agree on the naming of another human being.

8. Any and all nights you sleep through the night without waking up to pee.

It’s rare, I’ll give you that, but it does happen. Severe exhaustion plus a slight case of not drinking water in the late hours, and I’ve woken up to what felt like the most glorious, restful sleep of my life. Which I’ll take now, before the newborn days, thank you very much.

9.The day you hit 30 weeks.

Maybe it’s just me, but there’s something about the fact that you can now count down, instead of up. It’s all about the mind games during pregnancy, folks. Bring on those last 10 weeks, baby!
