Maze Cord Blood partners with Vitalant for processing and storage. Vitalant is an FDA registered, AABB accredited lab that is a member of National Cord Blood Inventory (NCBI) and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

As you know, the Zika virus has been implicated as a cause of severe birth defects (microcephaly – small brain and head size) in more than 25 countries, predominantly in South and Central America. The virus is primarily transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito, and often there are no visible symptoms of an infection.
While there are no widespread rapid tests for Zika, efforts are currently underway to develop them, and are expected to be available soon. There are standard non-rapid tests for the Zika virus that could be used if needed to test cord blood or cord tissue that is already cryopreserved, so there should be no interruptions for cord blood banking.
Microcephaly can be detected by ultrasound during pregnancy. At this time, it is recommended that cord blood not be stored from babies born with microcephaly. If you would like additional information, please visit the following two links about the Zika virus and pregnancy:
