The Related Donor Cord Blood Program:
Helping families with medical need |
For most of us, we can count our blessings every day. We, along with our children, live most of our lives disease-free, and we bank cord blood as a way to protect our family against an uncertain future.
But for some families, a disease may be a known entity in their lives. For some, the disease may be one where the treatment standard is a stem cell transplant. For these families, the federal government has programs in place that arrange for cord blood banking without a charge, and also authorize insurance companies to cover the cost of transplantation.

Spina Bifida treated with cord blood stem cells in China |
|
We report often on the progress made using cord blood stem cells to treat cerebral palsy at Duke University, a forerunner in stem cell treatment. The funds for this research, however, are limited to treatment of CP, and cannot be adapted to address other diseases within the parameters of the study.
A family will be traveling to China today in order to have umbilical cord stem cells transplanted for the purpose of healing a small girl with spina bifida. As with CP, the tranfusion does not solve the problem in isolation; the family expects to dedicate itself to therapies and treatments upon their return from the 5-week trip.
The treatment, with a price tag of $36,000, was paid for in part through community fundraisers. Read about the journey this Illinois family is on as they try to heal their daughter. |
