FDA Advisory Committee Considers Licensing Cord Blood Product
A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee last week considered a biologics license application (BLA) submitted by New York Blood Center to treat hematologic diseases with cord blood. This marks the first time that FDA has considered a BLA for cord blood licensure, since a final guidance was published on the subject two years ago.
The Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee meeting took place on Sept. 22 in Gaithersburg, Md. The meeting began with introductory remarks by Celia Witten, MD, PhD, director of the Office of Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies of CBER. Andromachi Scaravadou, MD, Medical Director of the National Cord Blood Program at the Howard P. Milstein Cord Blood Center then gave a detailed review of the activities of the program since its inception, together with Program Director Pablo Rubinstein, MD.
John Hide, MD, PhD and Donna Przepiorka, MD, PhD, presented a review of Efficacy and Safety Data prepared by FDA. The committee was asked to discuss issues raised by FDA. There was no request for a vote on specific recommendations. (to read more of this article, please click here) |
